How Dry Eye Disease Develops & How to Treat It

man with dry eye sneeze

Dry eye disease is an increasingly common eye condition that can happen either because the eye is not producing enough tears, or because tears are evaporating too quickly, leaving the eyes without enough moisture to function comfortably.

This can happen for several reasons including allergies, side effects from medications, hormonal changes, and illness.

Depending on the cause and exact symptoms of your dry eyes, our River North eye doctors will be able to prescribe treatments and medications aimed at increasing the amount of tears your eye produces and/or slowing the evaporation of tears to better hydrate your eyes.

What Are the Main Causes of Dry Eye?

  • Aging

Dry eye disease tends to affect people over the age of 50. This is because tear production slows as we age. As the lacrimal glands produce fewer tears, dry eye develops.

  • Hormonal changes

It's not uncommon for some women to experience dry eye symptoms during pregnancy, menopause, or while using birth control pills. That's because hormone imbalances can reduce tear production.

  • Autoimmune disease

Certain autoimmune diseases, like Sjögren’s syndrome, can cause white blood cells to attack your tear glands, thus reducing tear production. Other diseases like arthritis, lupus, and diabetes can also cause poor or insufficient tear production.

  • Medications

Certain medications can reduce mucus production (one of the 3 tear components) thus contributing to chronic dry eye.

They include antihistamines, antidepressants, diuretics, and beta-blockers.

Note that this is just a handful of causes. There are many other factors that can contribute to dry eye, including pollution and dry air, allergies, poor tear quality, dehydration, contact lens wear, and more.

Dr. Natalie and the team at Wear are the best. I was a patient here for several years before moving ... and trying a few different optometrists in the following years. I finally came back to Wear and was reminded how personal and friendly they treat all their patients and how awesome, knowledgable and understanding Dr. Natalie is. Best in the city!

I had a really good experience with Wear Eyewear in River North. They carry ic Berlin and were able... to order the frames I wanted but that they didn't stock. Their service was great - they helped me hone in my prescription after I wasn't satisfied with my original prescription from a different company. They weren't pushy on the sales side, which I appreciate. Highly recommended!

Wear Eyewear- Chicago location. I’ve been a patient of the fabulous team at Wear EyeWear Chicago ... for over a year now, and I am extremely happy with the care I get there. To start, the space is a boutique business, so if you like personalized care unlike what the chain stores offer then this is your spot . I liked that fact that I got the expertise of an experienced optometrist , and experienced opticians. Dr. Natalie Wozny is the best. She is warm and inviting. I was really shocked that in the brief time we talk last year, she remembered our last conversation on my most recent visit this year. My vision after she examined me is much clearer and crisper. I didn’t know how blind I was, until she cleaned my prescription up; and I mean cleaned it up. Thank You Dr Wozny.👀😊❤️ After my eye exam. I got to work with Joe Winjum who is an involved owner. He help find me the best pair of glasses. I mean when It comes to glasses, I’m a picky person; then again we all are. But I was impressed with his ability to get me out of my comfort zone, and changing my view on what kind of glasses fit my face. I’m extremely happy with my purchases. Thank you Thank you Joe😊 Finally, Nicole is awesome, she’s always very professional and welcoming. I remember her nods when the glasses are a win. Thank you Thank you Nicole If you want expertise, experience and personalized care- Wear eyewear Chicago or Orland Park are your place to go.

INDEPENDENTLY OWNED & OPERATED with friendly, very professional and knowledgeable eye care. I get al... l my glasses from Wear Eyewear! They have such a great variety of high-end frames. But the people at Wear Eyewear is what makes this store amazing. I received outstanding customer service from Joe in Chicago! Joe & Maria both were so wonderful with helping me find the perfect pair of glasses and making adjustments when it wasn't quite right. Of course it all starts with a fantastic doctor! Natalie Wozny Glebiv, O.D. took her time with me, which resulted in the most comprehensive eye exam with a nice sharp prescription. Thanks to all at Wear Eyewear!

I have nothing but great things to say about Wear Eyewear. I moved here from Texas, needing a new ey... e doctor, and I've been going here for the last two years. The appointments are always on-time and very quick. They are very helpful with questions and I've even called the receptionist to help me with insurance questions and a time when I ran out of contacts! Love this place.
- May. 12, 2018
Dr. Wozny was great! My appointment only took about half an hour, and they have a cool camera to loo... k at the back of your eye so they didn't have to do dilation. Even though I had not had an eye appointment in two years and my prescription might have changed, they did not try to upsell me on new, expensive frames and offered a trial for some new contacts. Dr. Wozny was also very thorough and explained everything she was doing, and answered all my questions.

I have to say that this place is really great. All the staff are so lovely and genuinely caring that... they made me feel so comfortable. I found this place on a whim when I broke my glasses, and now I feel I’ve found a place I can completely rely on.

Dry Eyes FAQs

Can I still wear contact lenses if I have dry eye syndrome?

Yes, some people can still wear contact lenses with dry eye syndrome. However, depending on its severity, you may need to carefully select the adequate contact lens for optimal clarity and comfort.

Oftentimes, because contact lenses sit on the eye, it's difficult for vital oxygen to reach the eye. This can worsen dry eye symptoms, and increase the risk of scratching or otherwise damaging your eye. Make sure to ask your eye doctor which contact lenses are most adapted to your condition.

Can dry eye syndrome be cured?

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for dry eye syndrome. There are, however, many treatment options that offer lasting dry eye relief.

Can dry eye syndrome cause blindness?

In rare extreme cases, dry eye syndrome can cause corneal ulcers. These ulcers can result in scarring on the eye, making it difficult for the cornea to focus light accurately. If left untreated, corneal ulcers and the associated scarring can result in blindness.

How can I prevent dry eye symptoms?

Below are a few tips that will help prevent dry eye symptoms:

  • Point fans, heaters, and air vents so that they don’t directly blow into your eyes
  • Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids
  • Stay properly hydrated
  • Take breaks during long tasks, especially those that require extended visual focus
